When a person takes their vehicle to an auto parts store to read the codes out of their car due to a check engine light, very often there will be oxygen sensor codes. Of course, the auto parts store will sell you oxygen sensors; as their job is to sell you parts- not fix your car. We get calls often that is similar to:

“Hello, I have a check engine light on and had the codes read. How much to replace all 4 oxygen sensors?”

Not only is throwing parts at the problem expensive and irresponsible, it’s almost certainly not the problem.

Remember, the oxygen sensor is reading the after effect, and giving feedback.

If there is too much air getting into the engine from a leak (or the exhaust is leaking!) the oxygen sensor will report back it’s too lean and can’t control the fuel mixture, which will lead to oxygen sensor faults…

If there is a restriction in the air filter, or a fuel injector is spraying too much fuel, the oxygen sensor will report back it’s too rich and can’t control the fuel mixture, which will lead to oxygen sensor faults….

Two very common issues- and both issues are not the oxygen sensors fault! This is why it’s so important to have a competent technician at a reputable independent shop test and assess the issues at hand and diagnose the problem, not simply throw parts at a car problem.
