A Better Driving Experience With Electronic Shocks

Let’s take a dive into the fascinating world of electronic shocks and their incredible journey from the early days to the cutting-edge systems we see in vehicles today.

As a BMW master technician with over 22 years of experience, I’ve witnessed firsthand the remarkable transformation that electronic shocks have brought to the automotive industry.

The inception of electronic shocks can be traced back to the late 20th century when automakers began experimenting with adaptive suspension systems. One of the early pioneers in this field was Delphi Automotive, introducing the MagneRide system in the 1990s. This groundbreaking technology utilized electromagnetically controlled shocks, adjusting their damping rates in real-time based on driving conditions.

BMW showed up with “EDC” in the 7 series- a button you’d push and it’d make the ride stiffer for a more “sporty” feel. In a surprising turn of events, the renowned audio technology company, BOSE, stepped into the automotive world with a groundbreaking application of electronic shocks. Partnering with Lexus, BOSE introduced the “BOSE Ride” system in the early 2000s. There’s a neat video you can find on Youtube with the system in action if you want to see how it works.

These first iterations of electronic shocks marked a significant leap forward in suspension technology. However, it was just the beginning of a revolution that would redefine the driving experience.

Fast forward to the present day, and electronic shocks have become a staple in premium European vehicles, including the ones serviced here at ABR Houston. The technology has evolved, incorporating advanced sensors, control modules, and customizable driving modes. As a BMW repair shop in The Woodlands who also services other European models, we ensure that your electronic shocks are not just a component but a sophisticated system designed to deliver the perfect balance of comfort and performance.

This evolution in electronic shocks is now often coupled with air ride suspension as well. This means more than just cutting-edge technology. It means a driving experience that combines the best of comfort and performance, tailored to your preferences.

Whether you’re navigating the streets of The Woodlands, Texas, or embarking on a cross-country journey, your European vehicle equipped with electronic shocks ensures a variety of driving styles, and ultimately driving enjoyment.
