This week, let’s focus on maintaining your generator and troubleshooting common issues to ensure it’s always ready when you need it.
Regular Maintenance: Keeping Your Generator in Top Shape
Proper maintenance is key to the longevity and reliability of your generator. Here are some essential maintenance tasks:
Oil Changes
- Frequency: Change the oil every 50-200 hours of operation (depending on the engine) or at least once a season. The smaller the engine, the lower hours you should adhere to.
- REMEMBERthat most of these small engines are lubricated by literally splashing oil around and no oil filter! They have no oil pump, like a vehicle does. It’s important to change the oil on these small engines more often than you would think, to ensure they stay alive. If you just bought one, a good rule of thumb is to change it after a few hours of run time, then (depending on the size) follow a good rule of 100 hours.
Air Filter Cleaning/Replacement
- Frequency: Check the air filter every 250 hours of operation. Clean or replace as needed, or once a year
- Steps: Remove the air filter, clean it with soapy water if it’s washable, or replace it if it’s paper
Spark Plug Inspection
- Frequency: Inspect the spark plug every 100 hours of operation.
- Steps: Remove the spark plug, check for signs of wear or carbon buildup, clean or replace it if necessary.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SPARE SPARK PLUG AND THE TOOLS AVAILABLE!
Fuel System Maintenance
Fuel Stabilizer
- Purpose: Prevents fuel from breaking down and causing starting issues.
- Steps: Add fuel stabilizer to the tank if the generator will sit unused for more than 30 days.
- You can get this at the auto parts store. Sta-bil brand is the benchmark for this.
Carburetor Cleaning
- Frequency: Clean the carburetor annually or if the generator has trouble starting.
- Steps: Remove the carburetor, disassemble it, clean all parts with carburetor cleaner, and reassemble.
- If that’s too much, we have an ultrasonic cleaner that can clean the carburetor
- OR an aftermarket replacement may be easier, but in my experience they usually don’t run well.
Troubleshooting Common Generator Issues
Even with regular maintenance, issues can arise. Here are some common problems and solutions:
Generator Won’t Start
- Possible Causes: Stale fuel, dirty air filter, faulty spark plug, or clogged carburetor.
- Solutions: Replace the fuel with fresh, stabilized fuel.
- Clean or replace the air filter.
- Inspect and replace the spark plug if necessary.
- Clean the carburetor.
- Maybe a little squirt of starting fluid to get it going
Generator Runs Rough
- Possible Causes: Dirty air filter, clogged fuel lines, or issues with the spark plug.
- Solutions: Clean or replace the air filter.
- Check and clean fuel lines.
- Inspect and replace the spark plug if necessary.
Generator Surges or Stalls
- Possible Causes: Fuel system issues or dirty carburetor.
- Solutions: Ensure fuel lines are clear and fuel is fresh. Clean the carburetor.
Storing Your Generator
Proper storage is crucial to ensure your generator starts up when you need it:
Fuel Storage
- Steps: Run the generator dry or use fuel stabilizer to prevent fuel breakdown.
- Literally turn off the fuel and let it run out of gas to get it out of the carburetor. This is easy, and solves a lot of issues!
Clean and Cover
- Steps: Clean the generator, change the oil, cover it to protect from dust and moisture, and store it in a dry place.
